LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent is an organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and same gender loving people of African Descent and their allies formed to serve as ambassadors and educators to oppose discrimination, exclusion or intimidation of LGBT persons in our society and particularly in our church communities.
"We promote the spiritual values of love and inclusiveness. Our activities include cultural activities by African American artists who support LGBT rights, public education, social media, op-eds, an annual forum and workshops. Attendance at our events continues to grow, and so does our visibility. We have received encouragement from leading religious institutions, theologians and clergy. By addressing African American homophobia directly, we are engaging in bold and innovative work."
Dr. Perry is also the co-founder of the Circle of Life Celebration and Pride Memorial, established to honor members of the LGBTQ community who have passed, and to provide a space for same-gender-loving and transgender people who have not been mourned or recognized for their authenticity. She was also a co-founder and member of the Black and Latino LGBT Coalition.
In our organization, the LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent, we uphold a vision rooted in the abundant grace of our divine heritage. Thus, we are compelled to spread hope and build communities that reflect the expansive love of the divine.
Following significant strides in LGBTQIA+ inclusion within faith spaces, particularly among African Descent communities, many are seeking guidance on the next steps in aligning with God's call for the embrace of all beloved individuals. Our organization has embarked on a journey of discernment to address this question, emerging with a refreshed theological perspective on our purpose in the world and practical guidance for our congregations and members.
Central to our mission is the belief that every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is a cherished creation in the image of the divine. This belief challenges outdated notions and affirms the inherent worth of LGBTQIA+ individuals within our faith communities.
As we reflect on the origins of our movement, we recognize the importance of moving beyond mere tolerance towards genuine inclusion. Our journey involves transcending the limitations of "OR" distinctions—such as bisexual OR transgender, straight OR gay—and embracing the fullness of "AND."
The LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent assert that our path forward hinges on a profound understanding of the abundant nature of God. We envision a world where believers are inspired by the boundless generosity of the divine. Rather than shrinking from the vastness of God's love, we are called to embrace it with reverence and amazement.
In embracing God's abundance, our organization advocates for a journey of growth and transformation within individuals and congregations alike. This journey begins with a deepening comprehension of a theology rooted in God's overflowing abundance, which then permeates every aspect of our communal life and spiritual practice.
Our programs and resources are tailored to support individuals and congregations in embodying the principles of an abundant God, fostering inclusive policies and practices that reflect the limitless love and welcome of the divine.
